Between the 1970s and as recently as 2018, Indigenous women in Canada reported being coerced or pressured into sterilization procedures — sometimes while in labour, sometimes without understanding what they were consenting to. This practice was carried out within the mainstream healthcare system. A healthcare professional once argued: "What happened was a product of its time.
